Spain's gov’t bringing forward 'digital dividend'

Spain_mobile_operatorsSpain's government wants to bring forward the culmination of the “digital dividend” process, distributing the spectrum freed up by the move to digital-only broadcasting among the telco operators. The process could be brought forward as much as two years before all forecasts, to finish in two years’ time.

Bids to allocate the mobile spectrum will be made in the first half of next year but under current plans, these frequencies would not be ready until 2015 because they are still being used by the broadcasters.

The process to "clean" the radioelectric spectrum will be long according to all forecasts, but the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce wants to have this matter ready in 2013.

Momentum for bringing the process forward comes from the mobile operators' who want to have the spectrum at their disposal as soon as possible.

Other countries, for example Germany, have already allocated the freed-up spectrum.
