Spain launches new video transmission system

Spain’s Mediapro together with producer Park 7 have launched a new video system distribution, LiveU, which will enable live transmissions from reporters into the broadcast stream using file transfer protocol (FTP) rather than a satellite connection. The system was used by broadcasters in the last US presidential elections.
The new system allows the signal transmission live and via FTP from any place with the simple coverage of a mobile phone, so giving bigger autnomy and mobility to reporters. Several international TV channels already use this technology such as NBC in the US, Sky in the UK and BMF in France.
LiveU technology is based on taking full advantage of the capacity available in the networks of the main mobile telephony operators on a national level and use them simultaneously to make the transmissions. The system gets to create in a virtual way a high capacity channel transmission by adding the different individual channels.
The transmission unit to which any kind of camera can be connected is made of a series of mobile telephony modems in which the main SIMs of the main national operators are inserted. The system distributes a video stream through six open channels and at the same time adapts such distribution to the bandwidth available in the modems. This way it optimizes the quality and speed of the transmission.
Finally, the transmission unit can also get connected to Wi-Fi networks and/or to cable networks so increasing the number of open channels broadcasting and therefore the bandwidth available.
The LiveU system will soon allow HD transmissions and can transmit up to 2.5 Mbps.
