Spain approves new audiovisual law

Spain has finally approved its new audiovisual law called the General Law for the Audiovisual Communication. All political parties, broadcasters, and viewers’ associations agreed on the need for this new law, fixing the rules of this sector.

The law includes the creation of the Council for the Audiovisual Media which will regulate audiovisual media. Some parties critiziced this council, alleging it is unnecesary and will cost a lot to run. Other parties critiziced the fact the council will have power to close down a TV channel if it doesn't fulfill with the law. Some would rather a judge had this power.

The new law in particular protects children, banning adult transmissions or too much violence on television. Moreover programs will have to be classified by age according to their contents.

Another important point of this law is the fact it limits advertising space to 12 minutes per hour and allows 5 minutes of self promotions and 3 minutes of telepromotions. At the same time the law includes that the advertisements of alcoholic beverages can only be shown between 10pm and 6am.
