Deutsche Telekom unveils new strategy

deutsche_telekomGerman telco Deutsche Telekom wants to make itself more independent of the declining fixed-line telephony market by focusing on new growth areas. Investments will be made into intelligent networks, IT and internet services, CEO René Obermann announced at the company’s investor day.

Furthermore, Telekom wants to expand its footprint in the TV business in Europe and become the pay-TV market leader in Germany. The company wants to grow the number of customers of the IPTV platform T-Home Entertain which it offers on its ADSL broadband networks in Germany to 2.5 to 3 million in 2012 with 5 million customers envisaged for 2015.

At the end of 2009, T-Home Entertain topped the 1 million customer mark; Telekom plans to add another 500,000 customers this year. Pay-TV market leader Sky Deutschland currently has 2.47 million subscribers.

Obermann sees further chances for turnover growth in mobile data services, stirred by the increasing popularity of smartphones and netbooks.
