The cost of viewing 3D content in cinemas is about to cost exhibitors a great deal less. Dolby announced at ShoWest, the trade show devoted to all things cinematic, that it was slashing the cost of its 3D spectacles from $27.50 each to just $17. All you need do is to buy them in 1000-pair bundles!
Dolby has an important, but minority place, in 3D specs. RealD dominates the market in its 3D technology, and RealD specs cost exhibitors only about a dollar a pair. Dolby says it has 3200 3D systems deployed in more than 67 markets.
“This growth in the number of Dolby 3D equipped digital cinemas around the world has enabled us to reduce the price of our glasses further,” said John Carey, VP/Worldwide Sales, Products, and Services, Dolby Laboratories. “Our eco-friendly glasses are designed to be used repeatedly, bringing per-ticket costs well below disposable single use 3D glasses.”
Dolby’s 3D glasses claim high-performance and need no batteries or charging.
It is too soon to judge whether 3D specs for home use will fall much below $100 a pair, although one can only hope that as volumes increase and there’s greater competition in the retail market, prices will fall.
