Telekom Malaysia has set March 24 as the launch date for a triple-play high speed broadband service, which will include television offerings.
Details of content, packaging and pricing will be unveiled at the launch but the company has promised that it will include low-cost options. The new high speed broadband (HSBB) package will include both linear and on-demand channels as well as voice and internet access at speeds up to 10 Mbps.
Launch of the consumer offering will put new pressure on Astro, which dominates the Malaysian pay-TV landscape. The company has 3.1 million pay-TV subs, including 2.9 million residential, some 40% of Malaysian homes. It is the only major pay-TV operator in the country.
The network has been developed in a partnership with the Malaysian government. TM has funded the network to the tune of RM8.9 billion (US$2.7 billion), while the Malaysian government has contributed RM2.4 billion.
