Russian TV channel RTR Planeta has been fined $225,000 in a London court.
RTR Planeta was found guilty of making unfounded allegations that millionaire Russian businessman Boris Berezovsky was somehow involved in the murder of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko.
Indeed, the whole case has the ring of a spy drama about it. The facts are in themselves wholly fascinating starting with the horrible ‘slow death’ murder of Litvinenko, who had been fed with highly dangerous Plutonium in London back in 2006.
Boris Berezovsky is an expat Russian oligarch, living in London, and something of a fierce critic of Vladimir Putin’s regime. Speaking immediately after the verdict, Mr Berezovsky said he had tried to protect his reputation and was satisfied with the judgement. He added that he had "no doubt" RTR and the Russian authorities tried to undermine his asylum status in the UK and put the murder investigation of Mr Litvinenko on the "wrong track".
Boris Berezovsky had been a major shareholder in Russia’s main TV channel (ORT), which was taken over by President Putin. Berezovsky remains on a Russian ‘wanted list’ having been convicted in absentia of assorted charges including embezzlement.
