WIN asks for switch-off cash

Australian regional network WIN TV is asking the federal government for financial help towards the digitalisation of its transmission networks.

A report in the Adelaide-based newspaper The Advertiser quoted WIN’s owner Bruce Gordon saying that there was “strong government support” for help for regional networks.

In the two states of South and Western Australia, WIN transmits through 68 terrestrial transmitters and 150 translator stations.

“We are asking the Government for funding to go digital in SA and WA, and they are making very good noises they are going to because they want all the viewers to have access to all the channels,” Gordon said. “We are looking to the Government to say `you're going to have to help because we'll go broke quick enough without having to buy 68 new transmitters for WA to go digital'.”

A recent government announcement on a licence fee rebate for commercial networks would only see WIN receive around A$4 million back.
