Uruguay to switch from DVB to ISDB?

Europe’s DVB group thought they had Uruguay won and wrapped up as far as the country’s broadcasting standard is concerned. Not so.

Brazil, firmly backing its rival ISDB transmission standard, has offered $40m to Uruguay to switch from DVB into the ISDB fold, a decision already made by most Latino countries.

According to the local media, last week Uruguay’s new president, José Mujica, made reference to that fact that, at the beginning of his term Uruguay will have to define whether the selected standard is changed or the European DVB standard remains in place.

The new Ministry of Industry Sub-secretary, Edgardo Ortuño, told El País newspaper that the agreement with the European Union had not been signed yet and that "Uruguay will choose the most convenient models". Brazil's focus is aimed at Mr Mujica, who took office on March 1, and his ratification, or revision of, the agreement with the EU, to which the former state president, Tabaré Vázquez, had committed himself.

Last week, the Minister of Communications of Brazil, Hélio Costa, together with several advisors, highlighted ISDB's advantages in Uruguay. In the region, Venezuela, Argentina, Chile and Peru have turned to ISDB; whereas, Colombia, Panama, French Guyana and Dutch Antilles have chosen DVB.
