Taiwanese telco Chunghwa Telecom is reportedly close to announcing a deal with online movie provider Beijing Netmovie Co, backed by US-based venture capitalist International Data Group Ventures (IDG Ventures). Through the deal, a new internet TV platform will be offered in Taiwan, with Chunghwa providing the platform and technology and Netmovie the content.
Reportedly named VV8, as is Netmovie’s Chinese service, the new platform will concentrate initially on Taiwan before maybe targeting mainland China. VV8 Taiwan is set to launch in the first quarter of 2010 with a potential 50% of Taiwanese internet users (3-3.5 million out of 6-7 million) as a long-term target.
The Chinese government has recently closed a number of internet TV services, with CCTV recently announcing plans for its own internet TV offering.
