Sky 3D uses Cameron’s Avatar

BSkyB is using James Cameron’s hot pic Avatar as the foundation for its upcoming 3D-TV channel.

A Sky 3D commercial will be carried in some 700 British cinemas ahead of the screening of Avatar. The commercial talks about Sky’s 3D-TV channel launching next year. The ad will run for 6 weeks, and talks about the channel showing sport, movies and entertainment in 3D “on existing Sky+ HD boxes”. Viewers will need a suitable new ‘3D-ready’ TV set.

"As we move towards the launch of the UK's first 3D TV services, these are our first steps in widening public awareness of the service and providing a 'seeing is believing' experience," said Hilary Perchard, the Sky director of product management. "As Sky's 3D TV services use the same underlying technology as that being used in cinemas, it seemed natural to use Avatar as our first marketing platform. We also wanted to give consumers the opportunity to sample first-hand the quality of experience we will offer next year."
