NCTA calls for “robust” set-top box market

The powerful National Cable Telecommunications Assoc is calling on the Federal Communications Commission to initiate an inquiry into future use of set-top boxes. The NCTA wants a strong market in STBs.

NCTA president Kyle McSlarrow wrote to FCC media bureau chief Bill Lake on Friday, responding to Mr Lake's request for comments on the possibilities of a single hybrid box that can handle cable and broadband video, and designed to promote broadband take-up.

"As an initial matter, we agree that a fully-competitive retail navigation device market has not yet developed - despite the persistent efforts of the commission, the cable industry, and consumer electronics manufacturers and retailers," said McSlarrow, reported by Multichannel News.
