It has been perhaps the worst-kept secret in TV, and when some 2.5 years ago the giant Ericsson company bought out Tandberg Television most observers expected the Tandberg name to vanish. Now it is official.
Tandberg will change its name on January 25 next year. CTO Dr Giles Wilson said the new merged philosophy will stay exactly the same. "We are all about TV." He explained that a recent announcement which talked about Ericsson/Tandberg being appointed by Sweden's TV4 Group to operate the broadcaster's nationwide playout services. Ericsson already looks after playout for Canal Plus in the region, but Wilson's strong hint is to expect more of these contracts. In this latest deal Ericsson will work with TV4 to set up a joint business forum to formulate the broadcaster's strategy "in all its aspects," says Wilson.
"The interesting aspect for me is that Tandberg Television, on its own, could never have aspired to do that," said Wilson. "Being part of Ericsson provides additional scale, reach and competences," he added.
