RTL and Eutelsat launch MPEG-4 package

German broadcast group Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland will launch its DTT package in the Leipzig/Halle region on 7 December.

The bouquet, which is completely encrypted in Conax, comprises free-to-air channels RTL, RTL II, VOX and Super RTL along with pay-TV services RTL Crime and Passion.

As the compression technology MPEG-4 is used, viewers will need new set-top-boxes for reception, which are available from local retailers for €99. The DTT receivers currently on the market are only MPEG-2-compliant. While free-to-air TV channels will be available at no charge, reception of the two pay-TV services will cost €2.99 per month with the first year offered free.

Marketing, encryption, smartcard activation and customer management services are handled by Eutelsat's German subsidiary visAvision which also operates the direct-to-cable platform KabelKiosk. The offer, which is branded Viseo+, has been available in Stuttgart since 15 October.
