DirecTV's new CEO, Michael White, hired from PepsiCo, is seeking to expand DirecTV overseas. Moreover, his boss John Malone agrees.
Liberty Media's shareholders late on Thursday agreed to spin-off Liberty Media's Entertainment division and merge it with satellite operator DirecTV, and thus create a more focused entity that can seek out possible acquisitions, partnerships and similar opportunities around the world. DirecTV already has a presence in Latin America, for example.Dr Malone told Dow Jones Newswires that he believes White will intensify DirecTV's branding and relationship with telecommunications, particularly focusing on high-speed wireless service. He also expects White to "pour the coals" to further drive the Latin American business.
Bruce Churchill [formerly a News Corp man as COO at Star TV], who runs DirecTV's Latin America business, was considered a front-runner for the CEO position, says Dow Jones, and new boy White will likely focus on keeping him, according to insiders.
