Spain has just come through another phase of digital switchover, with another 1 million citizens now only getting digital TV signals. The geographical areas affected are Andalucía, Castilla y León and the Basque Country.
In total there are now 5.3 million Spaniards only receiving digital TV signals. In total there are nine digital projects planned within Phase I of the National DTT Transition Plan that have been put off as they did not reach the appropriate technical conditions required by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce. These areas were supposed to switch off in June when four million citizens went through the switch over within 18 areas.
The next switchover stage will take place in December and the last one on April 3, 2010 although some sources from the Ministry said several weeks ago that the national analogue switch over could be brought forward one or two months. However, this possibility seems to have vanished since the Minister of Industry Miguel Sebastián ruled it out.
National DTT coverage already reaches 96.3% of population. Also 73.7% of buildings are digitally adapted and the share is around 43.5% of total TV viewing.
