Young French watching less TV, but more DTT

Young people between 15 and 24 years-old tend to watch less TV, but when they do, they are more and more favouring DTT channels. According to research company NPA Conseil, the viewing time of historical terrestrial networks as well as cabsat channels went down while DTT channels like TMC, W9, NRJ12, Virgin 17, France 4 are more consumed.

Between the first six months of 2008 and the first six months of 2009, DTT TV consumption went up 5%. Between the end of 2007 and the end of 2008, the average TV viewing time of the 15-24 demographic rose from 13 to 18 minutes for DTT channels. At the same time, historical networks lost 12 minutes to reach 75 minutes.

Young people are “massively watching DTT in the morning, and especially music clips,” NPA adds. But other post-school slots also do attract young viewers, as games and series such as Dawson’s Creek, Newport Beach are on air.

NPA points out that entertainment contents, including older formats such as The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune on TF1, do work well with this age group, whether it is on DTT or other networks. Reality TV also remains attractive while French drama remain under-consumed, with the exception of comedies.
