KDG expresses interest in Orion Cable

Germany’s largest cable operator Kabel Deutschland (KDG) has expressed interest in acquiring parts of Orion Cable’s network should the financially troubled company need to sell off its assets.

“We would be the obvious purchaser because a combination of network levels 3 and 4 strategically makes the most sense,” a KDG spokeswoman tolds news agency Dow Jones Newswires, adding that KDG was interested in any attractive cable network with network level 4 (“last mile”) access within its coverage area. Germany’s federal cartel office recently spoke against any merger of the three large network level 3 cable operators, but hinted that it would not stand in the way of a consolidation of network levels.

Orion Cable is the largest network level 4 operator in Germany. The company, backed by financial investors, is currently in financial deep water due to debts of €1.8 billion. In early 2008 KDG acquired cable networks with around 1.1 million households from Orion Cable subsidiary Tele Columbus.
