Tender out for Aus broadband build

Australia is one step closer to a national broadband network, with the government yesterday calling for tenders to construct, operate and maintain the backbone links in six regional areas.

With construction of the network expected to begin by September, the government is fast-tracking the process in the six areas, spread across the country. Initial priority locations to receive A$250 million investment are Emerald and Longreach in Queensland, Geraldton in Western Australia, Darwin in the Northern Territory, Broken Hill in New South Wales, Victor Harbor in South Australia and South West Gippsland in Victoria.

Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, said: "The Government is moving rapidly to deliver the National Broadband Network and will start work on high-speed infrastructure for an initial six priority regional locations.

"This immediate action will result in new high-speed backbone links to stimulate competition and better broadband services in regional Australia."

"This is just the beginning and the National Broadband Network will ensure high-speed broadband is also expanded to all homes, schools and workplaces across Australia."

Subject to the outcome of the first round tender, more locations will be identified later in the year.
