US entertainment company Walt Disney is expanding its TV offer in Germany, with movie channel Disney Cinemagic to be launched in July on Premiere’s pay-TV platform.
The channel will be offered in standard as well as high definition. At the same time, the distribution contracts for Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney were extended on a long-term basis.
Disney Cinemagic screens current and classic animated films from the Disney and Pixar Studios, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937), Pinocchio (1940), Toy Story 2 (1999) and Finding Nemo (2003) as well as recent blockbuster hits from Walt Disney Pictures such as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008).
The channel was launched in March 2006 in the UK, followed by France, Spain and Portugal. Walt Disney is already present in the German pay-TV market with thematic channels Disney Channel, Playhouse Disney, Toon Disney, Jetix, ESPN Classic and ESPN America. Additionally, the company is a 50% shareholder in Super RTL and in conjunction with Tele München Gruppe holds a 31.5% stake in RTL II.
