French mobile phone operator Orange announced it has reached the million mark for iPhones sold in France, available since November 2007.
At the beginning of March 2009, Orange had closed 810,000 sales for the smart phone and aimed to pass the million mark despite the end of its five-year exclusive deal with Apple Inc to sell the iPhone in France. This agreement with Apple was broken by the Conseil de la Concurrence in December 2008 and the decision was confirmed in justice in February 2009. Since the beginning of April, competitors SFR and Bouygues have also been selling the iPhone. SFR has a sales target of 800,000 units by the end of 2010.
For operators, selling the iPhone is a lucrative business as Apple mobile phone owners spend around €86 (tax free) each month vs half of this amount on an average national basis.
