South Korea’s smallest IPTV player, myLGtv, has reached 100,000 users but still lags its larger rivals by some 700,000 subs. However, the platform’s owner plans to ramp up marketing for the service to its wider subs base over the next few months.
Backed by telco LG Dacom, myLGtv, had around 80,000 subscribers at the start of the year. Market leader KT’s Mega TV has some 800,000 subs – although that figure has not been update for some time – with SK Broadband’s Broad&TV (formerly Hana TV) on 780,000. The two market leaders have been neck and neck for some time.
LG Group companies - LG Telecom and LG Powercom as well as LG Dacom - are targeting 14 million subscribers in total by the end of this year with LG Dacom targeting the voice-over-IP and IPTV markets in a bid to reach 3 million total subs by the end of 2009. The company has recently expanded the reach of its IPTV services to houses as well as multi-dwelling units and complexes.
All three of South Korea's IPTV platforms have now launched linear channels on their networks following a change in the law last year allowing them to do so.
