RTVE to launch HD next year

Spain's national public broadcaster Corporación Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) will launch its first HDTV channel next March or April according to Pere Vila, director for Technological Innovation.

Before the channel can launch, a series of technical tests will be undertaken in the Castillan capital of Valladolid in order to check out the signal quality. The idea of this project is to broadcast HD contents such as sport, information and last but not least in programs.

All TVE's archival content will be converted from the cinema 35mm format to HD format. The tests will be launched either in SD and HD formats or only in HD formats using Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Digital+.

Finally, TVE will produce the next season of the Champions League in HD and also ATP tennis matches.
