Telstra IPTV plans revealed

Australian telco Telstra plans to have an IPTV service up and running before the end of 2009, with a mix of free-to-air channels, PVR capabilities, “over-the-top” content and a range of content from internet unit Bigpond, according to a local report.

Bigpond content from key genres including movies, music, games, news, sport and photos are likely to be included in the service. Telstra is keen that an e-commerce facility is included, as well as a networking ability with a user’s other connected devices.

But what seems to be missing is a pay-TV element, suprising given Telstra’s 50% stake in Foxtel. The telco already offers a Foxtel by Mobile streamed TV package on its NextG mobile network.

Pitches from set-top box suppliers and other prospective vendors are currently under way. According to Digital Media, Telstra is looking for a single supplier to construct and manage the set-top box design and evolution.
