UAE telco Du is about to offer its IPTV subscribers a high-def service. Du conducted technical HDTV trials last August, and has now contracted with Swedish IPTV specialist Tilgin as part of an ongoing upgrade of its Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) IP network in Dubai.
Tilgin will supply its Home Gateway Vood 292 solution, which includes next-generation software for managing IP-networks (VCM). The technology will replace older fibre units supplied by a competitor, say local reports.
Du is already carrying a raft of premium and basic pay-TV offerings from the likes of Showtime Arabia, Orbit and ART, and local satellite operators Nilesat and Arabsat are talking up HD's prospects in the region. ART is already committed to showing next year's FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in HD, while Luxe TV is showing an HD channel from Arabsat. Nilesat has talked of a promotional HD channel coming from some of its clients shortly.
Soccer is also key to likely plans from Showtime Arabia, which local reports suggest will launch HD sport and movie channels, helped by its exclusive coverage of the important 2009/2010 English Premier League games.
