DVB-T is likely to become the de facto standard for digital-terrestrial broadcasting in the Philippines after All Asia Broadcast System said it would use DVB-T when it launches a service in the capital Manila.
All Asia is waiting for the regulator to allocate frequencies for the service but expects to spend some PHP97 million (US$2 million) prior to launch, mainly on the necessary equipment for DTT broadcasting. There is no date set for launch.
There as yet has been no definitive decision on which standard will be adopted by the Philippines, although back in November 2006 the regulator recommended the adoption of DVB-T to the government, followed by another recommendation in October 2008. A DVB-H service, myTV, was launched in July 2007 by Smart Communications and broadcast firm 360media Corp, a subsidiary of MediaQuest Holdings, with another licence application for a DVB-H service also outstanding from All Asia.
Backing the All Asia DTT project is investment bank Asian Alliance Investment Corp, with a US$1 million credit line also available from Richardson Electronics Ltd.
In its first year, All Asia is forecasting revenues of about PHP278 million (US$5.8 million), rising to PHP407 million by year five.
