From today (Monday Feb 16) until Thursday, Barcelona is once again hosting the Mobile World Congress 2009, where the world's main mobile telcos gather to present their news. Mobile TV will feature highly.
In Spain the DVB-H standard is still to be adopted for use but operators already offer TV channels through their 3G networks. Spanish technological developer Sidsa, which owns pay-TV conditional access system KeyFly, is having success in countries such as Iran, Russia and Indonesia with its mobile TV conditional access system of the same name. At this congress the company will present tactile mobile phones where users can watch high quality television.
On the infrastructure side, Spain's main TV network operator Abertis Telecom facilitates and manages the transport and broadcasting mobile TV network for the congress. This means reception of both TV and interactive services.
In total, Abertis has deployed seven networks in order to give coverage to mobile TV demonstrations in different existing standards such as DVB-H, DVB-SH and MediaFLO. On this occasion the news is on the use of the DVB-SH technology which will allow the live demonstration of mobile TV in the S band in the city of Barcelona.
Infrastructure deployed by Abertis Telecom includes its technical centres of transport and broadcasting at Torre de Collserola and its satellite capacity in Hispasat and Eutelsat as well as several terrestrial transmitters installed in the city and also in the show's space.
Abertis Telecom will broadcast through all these networks the programming of a number of TV channels and radio stations of various national and international broadcasters.
Apart from its technical participation as network provider Abertis Telecom has installed a technical room in the congress where all the equipment and advanced platforms necessary for these transmissions can be seen.
The company has also collaborated on the integration of the different CA's and interactive services over several mobile TV platforms deployed at the event. Thanks to these integrations the public is able to see the CA systems SCP, DRM and OSF aside from several types of applications. For the integration of the different interactive systems Abertis Telecom has collaborated with several technological providers such as the Spanish company Activa Multimèdia and Finland’s Sofia Digital.
The congress also presents the CHORIST project whose goals are the sending of alert messages by organizations dedicated to emergency tasks to as highest number of citizens as possible.
