German home-shopping channel RTL Shop is to be renamed Channel 21. The move was announced by Munich-based investment company Aurelius, which took over the broadcaster from RTL Group in August 2008.
The name change, which will take place gradually, will be completed in March. The new website can be found at www.channel21.de. The channel, which will continue to be based in Hanover, offers a 24-hour service of which half is live programmes.
Channel 21, which is the third-largest home-shopping broadcaster in German-speaking Europe after QVC and HSE24, reaches around 35 million households via cable, satellite and internet throughout Germany.
Aurelius confirmed at the time of the take-over that it would give RTL Shop a new name. The company wants to turn the channel, which has been making losses since its launch in 2001, into a profit-making business within 12 to 15 months. Also on the agenda is an expansion into neighbouring countries Austria and Switzerland.
