Zattoo gets competitor

A new online platform has launched in Switzerland, offering live streams of conventional TV channels via the internet.

Dubbed Wilmaa, the service, which is backed by Zurich-based IP video service provider Solutionpark Streaming, currently comprises 22 channels including Switzerland’s main public and commercial broadcasters, as well as thematic channels and foreign services.

The live-streams are accessible for free at www.wilmaa.com after a one-time registration. As is the case with competitor Zattoo, which offers a comparable internet TV streaming service, Wilmaa aims to finance through commercials which are shown when the service is first accessed and during channel switching.

However, in contrast to Zattoo no software player needs to be downloaded and installed on the computer to access the live-streams. Instead, the service uses the conventional internet browser.

Both Wilmaa and Zattoo offer comparable picture quality. While Wilmaa is currently only available to internet users in Switzerland, Zattoo offers its service in several European countries including the UK.
