Broadband operator Tiscali was expected to close its Italian IPTV service by Dec 31 having failed to find a buyer for the system. The ISP will switch off its broadband service first, with the individual digital terrestrial service being abandoned by Jan 15.
As this is written there is no news on the fate of its struggling
British service, which BSkyB was in negotiation to buy. However, BSkyB
pulled out of the talks having failed to agree a price with Tiscali.
Tiscali's Italy service is understood to have about 50,000
subscribers. Tiscali's UK service has closer to 1.8m subscribers in
total, and it is understood that the talks between Tiscali and BSkyB
were in the £425m-£500m range.
