Singapore Telecom’s mioTV IPTV pay-TV service is in trouble over its high-profile brand name.
Electronics giant MiTAC Int’l Corp is claiming that SingTel’s use of
the ‘mio’ aspect infringes on one of its subsidiary businesses, Mio
Technology. Mio Technology is best known for its ‘Mio’ PDA products,
and its Mio DigiWalker combines a PDA with GPS technology. It owns a
range of other products exploiting the ‘mio’ appendage (MioMore,
MioMoov, etc.). The business has extensive retail operations in Taiwan,
China, South Korea, Australia and throughout Europe and the USA.
The case is filed in the Singapore court, although SingTel reportedly
says there is no likelihood of confusion amongst customers.
