Etisalat’s IPTV-based channel and VOD distribution system might have run into a batch of legal problems.
Local reports in Abu Dhabi suggest that Etisalat is being subjected to
a patent claim over how it uses Internet TV. Evidently a UAE patent,
granted by the Emirate and registered with the World Intellectual
Property Organisation (but only in 2005) describes a system for
transmitting video and sound via the internet.
Etisalat’s IPTV-based system was built via a contract with France
Telecom, and launched in September, and thus triggering this claim.
