MTV Networks is planning to launch a pan-European HDTV channel in mid-September.
Speaking to German industry publication Medienbote, Stefan Liebig,
director content distribution & network development at MTV Networks
Germany, explained that the channel would be offered on pay-TV
platforms throughout Europe and is currently looking for distribution
partners to make the premium offer available as soon as possible in
individual countries.
The HDTV service, which will be transmitted in video mode HD 1080i and
Dolby Surround 5.1 sound, will mostly screen high-def footage from
festivals, live concerts and music events such as the MTV Video Music
Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards. Popular series such as MTV
Unplugged and VH1 Storytellers will also be shown, with several hours
of entertainment programmes from the children’s channel Nickelodeon
screened on weekends. MTV Networks has operated HDTV channel Music:
High Definition in the US since January 2006.
