Music lovers can enjoy classical music concerts in HDTV this summer on Astra (19.2° East). Satellite operator SES Astra will transmit the “Festival summer of
classics” from July 7 until the end of September in collaboration with
German production and distribution company Unitel Classica.
SES Astra’s
free-to-air HD demonstration channel will be used on the frequency
11.914 GHz H (SR 27,500, FEC 9/10). Seven hours of productions from
this year’s Salzburg Festival, the Valencia opera house and other
selected music concerts will be screened each evening in high
definition with Dolby Digital surround sound from 19:00 CET. This
includes the opening concert of the Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra at
the Salzburg Festival as well as concerts from Schönbrunn Castle in
Vienna with Anna Netrebko, Plácido Domingo and Rolando Villazón and
star pianist Lang Lang.
“With Astra, Unitel Classica has found a partner to screen classical
music on television using today’s best available sound and picture
quality, so that it’s almost like being there,” said Unitel Classica’s
managing director Jan Mojto. Wolfgang Elsäßer, managing director of
Astra Deutschland, explained: “The transmission of high-carat classical
events gives us the opportunity to show a broad audience exactly what
HDTV can do: needle-sharp impressive pictures which convey to the
viewer a unique live experience.”
