Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) leader Netflix has gained the rights for the worldwide premiere of RTVE’s latest hit.
Under the terms of the agreement, Netflix will collaborate with RTVE in producing the third season of El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Ministry of Time), which was about to be cancelled due to the public broadcaster’s budget limitations.
RTVE will retain exclusivity for the Onza-produced fiction series, and Netflix will distribute the format through its worldwide SVOD catalogue once the season concludes in Spain’s TVE and RTVE.es.
El Ministerio del Tiempo’s third season is already being filmed and will have a significantly larger budget, which will enable the production to include more special effects, infographics and 3D.
The series has become one of the most watched shows on RTVE’s channels during the last two years and has won international awards. The format has also been sold to other broadcasters worldwide and is to be adapted in different territories such as Portugal, where it will premiere on 2 January.
