Twitter has released an update that allows users to broadcast live video from within its app for iOS and Android.

twitter nflThe feature is powered by Periscope, Twitter’s live video app.

To start a broadcast inside Twitter, users can simply compose a new tweet and then tap a ‘live’ button. From there, the service uses a phone’s video camera to live stream.

During the broadcast, viewers who see your broadcast on their timelines can tap in, comment and send hearts.

The move brings Twitter competitively in line with Facebook, which has made live streaming a centrepiece of its engagement strategy this year.

“The integration allows broadcasters to leverage Twitter’s audience,” Periscope’s head of engineering Sara Haider said to Forbes. “Twitter is about real-time and what’s happening in the moment. Live video creates experiences you can engage in and be part of.”
