Aiming to add an interactive layer to Movistar+'s experience, Telefónica Televisión Social has been announced at Mobile World Congress.

telefonica tv socialThe social TV platform will enable viewers to join a new social conversation through Movistar+'s own interface, without the need to connect to other social media like Twitter or Facebook. The social TV feature allows users to comment on shows through videos, audio and text messages while watching content on both smart TVs and mobile screens.

“This is a step forward into television interactivity. It's an innovative project taking viewers into an experience that goes far beyond Twitter,” explained the telco.

Users' text, video and voice messages will be displayed live on the screen while the content is being broadcast, without interrupting the viewing experience.

The service creates chat rooms for each group of users and allows up to four simultaneous video calls per room. According to Carlos Melendo, director for networks services at Telefónica, the service will particularly target live sports and games.

Telefónica Televisión Social is still in beta, but is expected to be launched shortly for Spanish subscribers.

Telefónica also revealed that it intends to start operating in seven new Latin American pay-TV markets during 2016, namely Ecuador, Uruguay, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
