Come Dine With Me South Africa has won the Best International Format award at the 7th Annual South African Film and Television Awards 2013 (SAFTAs).
Commissioned by BBC Worldwide Channels for BBC Entertainment, the show was nominated alongside Masterchef SA and Dance Your Butt Off.
The SAFTAs are South Africa’s premier film and television industry awards under the custodianship of the National Film and Video Foundation and the winners are chosen by a panel of local TV experts. The Awards’ main objective is to honour, celebrate and promote the creativity, quality and excellence of South African film and television talent, and encourage entrepreneurship and the development of new talent in the industry.
Come Dine With Me South Africa follows four strangers as they visit one another’s homes for dinner and attempt to outwit and impress fellow guests with their culinary and hospitality skills in a bid to become the ultimate dinner party host and win a cash prize. Distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment, it is one of the world’s most successful television formats, produced in 36 territories internationally including Germany, France and Australia.
Produced locally by Rapid Blue, Come Dine With Me South Africa was the first local commission for BBC Worldwide Channels in the EMEA region and made its debut on BBC Entertainment in South Africa in October 2011. Come Dine With Me South Africa has also aired on BBC Worldwide Channels networks across the Middle East, the Nordics and Poland.
Jon Farrar, VP Programming EMEA, BBC Worldwide Channels, said: “It is brilliant news that our first ever local production for EMEA has resonated with our South African audience and has won at this year’s SAFTAs. Come Dine With Me South Africa is a great example of BBC Worldwide’s ongoing commitment to investing in original commissions, targeting both local markets and a global audience, and creating local versions of hugely successful British formats.”
