In the latest example of how games consoles are rapidly seeing use in online video, Chello Zone’s Extreme Sports Channel (ESC) has inked a deal to live stream a sporting event via the Xbox 360 gaming console.
On 17 March ESC will show the BMX Finals of the 13th annual Simple Sessions BMX and skateboarding contest across the EMEA region via Xbox LIVE, ESC’s website www.extreme.com and www.session.ee/live. Simple Sessions is said to be the world’s premier BMX and skateboarding contest.
Extreme Sports Channel has previously broadcast the Simple Sessions events across its four feeds and will include highlights of the latest season in the schedules later in 2013.The online broadcast is said to be the first live streamed sporting event with audience engagement and polling results broadcast on Xbox LIVE in EMEA.
Simple Sessions started in 2000 and has since put on 17 events – nine annual winter indoor festivals and several accompanying outdoor summer events. In 2012 the event featured almost 200 top riders and skaters from 35 countries, said by the organisers to have made it the most international action sports event in the world.
Commenting on what the channel believes will be a precedent-setting event, Andy Viall, head of online, Extreme Sports Channel, said: "We have been bringing the action from Simple Sessions live to our Web viewers for the past three years and are thrilled to be developing this into the games console space, and to be one of the first to broadcast sports content live with interactive audience polling via the Xbox.”
Added Rob Crossen, executive producer, EMEA at Xbox: “Xbox LIVE is uniquely placed to provide the best in gaming and entertainment so we are always looking for exciting content for our consumers. Live streaming from Simple Session is such a great fit for our audience and we’re excited to see how they interact with the content using our real time interactive polling.”
