German technical services provider Media Broadcast will launch its hybrid media portal which connects television with the Internet on 20 February 2013.

The free-of-charge Multithek will expand digital terrestrial television (DTT) with online on-demand services like the catch-up portals (Mediatheken) operated by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, which viewers will be able to access on their regular TV set.

For reception, a TV set or DTT receiver is required which is compliant with multimedia standard HbbTV and connected to the Internet. The Internet line should provide a data rata of at least 2Mbps. The line-up will include content from over 20 partners such as ARD, ZDF, QVC and QTom which contribute, for example, catch-up services, news, shopping offers, sports, music and weather reports. The portfolio will gradually be expanded with an emphasis on local and regional content.

The Multithek, which will be promoted by an extensive marketing campaign from March 2013, will initially be available in seven large metropolitan areas - Berlin, Hamburg, Saarbrucken, Rhine-Main (Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Mainz), Hannover, Braunschweig, Stuttgart - with further regions to follow.

The offering, which is operated in collaboration with Hamburg-based multimedia service provider NetRange, is integrated into the electronic programme guide (EPG) of the HbbTV-compliant reception devices, thereby enabling a seamless transition from terrestrial television to the interactive services which get to the TV screen via the Internet. Navigation is through the TV remote control.

Media Broadcast wants to make the Multithek available on other TV distribution platforms in future.
