German pay-TV channel Kinowelt TV will make Facebook and Twitter available on the TV set.
With an interactive application, which will launch on 1 March as a pilot project, viewers will be able to list detailed programme information on the TV screen while they are watching the channel as well as access programme trailers, discuss TV content with other users or recommend shows to them.
The multimedia service, which is accessible through the red button on the remote control, can be used with internet-capable TV sets or set-top-boxes compliant with the HbbTV standard. The free offer, which is based on the OnTeVe platform of German media service provider Nacamar, can also be accessed on PCs and Apple's iPad.
"We are the first pay-TV channel offering its viewers these value-added services through interactive and hybrid applications," Achim Apell, managing director of Kinowelt TV, said in Cologne. "Even though the technical reach of HbbTV-capable reception devices has to quickly grow now to really reach a mass market audience, it is important for us to participate at an early stage when such services launch."
