KT wins lion's share of 2009 IPTV subs

qookKorea Telecom announced year-end IPTV subscribers of over 1 million, up 89% in its first full year of operation.

Qook, KT’s combined IPTV, internet access and telephone package, had 1.17 million subscribers at the end of 2009, up 265,000 during the fourh quarter. Earlier in the year, KT rebranded its IPTV services from the Mega TV brand.

The telco is reportedly sweeping all before it, with rivals SK Telecom and LG Dacom thought to have signed up just around 400,000 and 300,000 subscribers respectively for their IPTV services. Prior to 2009, only on-demand IPTV services were allowed in Korea, with all three operators launching linear IPTV offerings in late 2008, following a change in the law.

KT is planning total IPTV investment of up to Won1.7 trillion (US$1.3 billion) to the end of 2012 and is targeting 3 million subs by that time.
